FOR PETS
BY ROBBIE JAMES

A Natural and Integrative Approach to Healing and Wellness for your Pet

There is a lot of stigma and misinformation about using Essential Oils for your Pets on the internet and even more on social media. Everyone has read the post about their dog or cat being poisoned because they left their oil burner or diffuser on with their pet in the house. I hate to say it, but these are just hype and hysteria for the most part unfortunately (I won't even speculate who started it). With all the testing that happens in laboratories on animals, scientists have been able to determine the lethal/fatal dosage of pretty much most essential oils that are on the market today.

The good news is the minute dosage that is administered through diffusion does not come close to the volume an animal must consume researchers have recorded that cause fatality. I am talking about volumes of millilitres per kilogram of your pet's weight, not the drops that you would be using when blending essential oils into base carriers or your oil burner to use at home.

Now the bad news is that like any "medicine" (complementary or conventional), there could be a "drug interaction" that essential oils cause with your pet's current medication. This is why it is very important to always use essential oils under the guidance of a Qualified Aromatherapist and your Vet.

I'll let you in on a secret... the cells that make up your pet are identical to the cells in your own body! They are just arranged differently so You look the way you do, and your Pet looks the way they do. This means your Pet can enjoy the benefits of Aromatherapy and Essential Oils just as you can. Benefits which may support your Pet coping with conditions such as anxiety, arthritis and pain, skin irritations and digestive issues, and emotional and mental health.

Your Pet's Aromatherapy appointment will consist of a discussion about your Pet's current health, their condition or concerns. I combine a classical approach of symptom guided remedies and incorporate a self-selection methodology to my Aromatherapy for Pet sessions. By offering your Pet a range of essential oils, they direct the appointment by choosing the remedies they need to restore their wellness and well-being.

It has been observed in the wild that animals seek out specific plants and minerals when they are unwell. Wild animals instinctively know what they need to consume or apply topically for their therapeutic benefits. I'm sure you have observed your own Pets eat grass or dirt. This behaviour is called "pharmacognosy". By using the self-selection method in my clinic, allows your Pet to use essential oils in a safe and controlled manner. In my experience I have observed Pets use their instincts to choose remedies that benefit them with a high level of success. It is an amazing process to watch, and needs to be seen to be believed.

Through my practice I have learned two things,

1. the placebo effect does not work on animals, and

2. animals just want to be well.
